Greetings traveler.
We welcome you to Delirium, where things are not what they seem and magic is just the beginning of your adventure.
This is a fairly new site, being only about 2 and a half months old. Our setting takes place about 400 years into the past - x391 being the current year - and dragons freely roam Earthland. While humans and dragons are currently in peace with each other, there is darkness brewing and that fragile line of truce between them might just break soon enough.
Episode One: Bastion, The Ironclad Dragon is now open!
Enjoy your stay, and please...
Stay delirious.

Peter Endless [Shadow Magic]

Post by Peter Endless on Fri Oct 26, 2012 2:03 am

Name: Endless Sin
Type: Caster
Element/Aspect: Dark
Description: It is essentially "shadow magic" but with a twist. Peter's shadow magic is split into three categories: soft, manageable, and hard. Soft can be described like the wispy-ness of thin fogs or clouds. The Soft aspect allows Peter to make himself become one with the shadows, enabling him to escape(to)/hide in the most unlikely of places, or even travelling short distances, etc. This aspect does no damage whatsoever, it used for stealth, spying, and defense. The Manageable aspect is the medium between Soft and Hard, and is actually tangible unlike the Soft aspect. Its purpose is to cause distractions and setting up traps, and what not. The feeling of this aspect is akin to pushing or pulling against a large wall of rubber. It is flexible and tough enough to catch regular or non-magic weapons or items (ex.: large boxes, blunt knives/swords, steel beams, etc.). It does minor damage. The Hard aspect (or aka Substance Aspect) of Peter's magic is made up of a more solid shadow and is capable of manipulating the substances to form objects ranging from weapons and vehicles like a horse. With its ability to take on various shapes, Peter can also manipulate, slice through, or devour anything that comes in contact with his shadow and it appears invulnerable to conventional physical harm, although it can be deflected/cut by sufficiently hard objects or strong magic.

For RP purposes: Peter is exceptionally in-tune with his magic that it actually fluctuates with his emotions. If his emotions are out of control, within a certain radius, the shadows will lighten or darken, and even "tremble" like waves in the ocean or shape themselves into spikes. His magic can also cause him to become somewhat transparent like a ghost, though he is still visible.

Side Effects: At low level spells if Peter overuses the "soft" aspect of his magic, he is prone to lose himself and letting his inner-most negative emotions show as opposed to his serious and clam persona. The higher level it is Peter will become transparent like a phantom and won't be able to touch anything solid - meaning he won't be able to eat or drink anything to regain his strength. If Peter has lost control of himself then so will his shadows, hitting even his allies.

I like the concept of the magic. I don't like how the "Soft" was described as an illusion because it mislead me into thinking it had sensory control... not "becoming one" with your shadows. I don't really have a problem with the magic in general, except for when you say the "hard" shadows can only be defeated by especially strong magic. It wouldn't make sense for a base spell to need more than a base or D-rank, depending on the spell, spell to destroy it.

Only real qualm I have with it is its lack of side effects. Surely it has some positive passive advantage or disadvantage that makes it more or less useful as a magic. Does becoming a shadow make you hungry, seeing how you flatten yourself? It fluctuates with your emotions, so if you're on a rampage with hard shadows, is it possible that it gets out of control and starts attacking you or your allies? I'm just suggesting possibilities, but surely there's some type of side effect.

Edited.

Though I kept the part about being defeated by "strong magic." I figured that the "appears invulnerable to conventional physical harm" sounded a bit OP, I added "strong magic" on there to make it clear that it be affected by that too. And what I meant by "strong magic", I meant like a more pure combative magic so that it wouldn't be broken by, say, supportive or debuffing spells or spells that are made to be distractions.

Of course it can still be broken by a base or D-Rank spell.

If this still poses a problem then I'll change it to "magic."

Edit: I've also added this part - "is capable of manipulating the substances to form objects ranging from weapons and vehicles like a horse." in the sentence before the last. I've forgotten to add it in there when I was typing it up from my notebook.

So long as when you are "intangible", as the side-effects suggest, you are still susceptible to attacks, this is fine.

Now get started on your spells!

Shadow Form:
Shadow Form
Tier: Base Spell
Sigils/Sigil Slots: 0/0
Magic Cost: 10, 5 continuous
Type:Utility
Element: Dark
Range: Self
Requirements: -
Effect: Peter is able to transform his body into "soft" shadow substance at will, allowing him to move around any surface. He is able to "sink" into the shadow, creating a puddle-like shape that's black and visible. Movement is at 5 m/s and is invulnerable to attacks until a part of his body is "out" of the "puddle."
Cooldown: 2 posts

Shadow Pull:
Shadow Pull
Tier: Base Spell
Sigils/Sigil Slots: 0/0
Magic Cost: 10
Type: Utility
Element: Dark
Range: Ranged - 10 meters
Requirements: -
Effect: The user creates a "soft" shadow in the shape of hand that can travel over distances to retrieve targets and bring them back to the user. The target is pulled into the shadow, and then brought back to the user. The size of the hand depends on the size of the object. If it was a small box then the hand is just big enough to engulf it. At base level, the spell can only retrieve objects that are 3ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. or smaller.
Cooldown: 1 post

Death:
Shadow Substance: Death
Tier: Base Spell
Sigils/Sigil Slots: 0/0
Magic Cost: 10, 5 continuous
Type: Offensive
Element: Dark
Range: Self
Requirements: -
Effect: By using Peter's "hard" aspect of his shadow, he creates a 6'0" tall scythe with a 32" blade. It weighs 20 oz. and 1.5 inches in width. It is a close-combat weapon that can be broken (3 blows of an equal tier spell, 2 blows of 1 tier higher, shatter on impact if spell is 2 tiers higher) or dismissed. If the weapon encounters another weapon (magic or otherwise) then it will be at the same level, trading blow for blow. At this point in time the blade is dull and not at all sharp, thus the damage given are large bruises in the shape of the curved blade. Wispy clouts of shadow permeates from it, showing that it's still shadow and not an actual item.
Cooldown: 3 posts

Shadow Substance: Fate
Tier: Base Spell
Sigils/Sigil Slots: 0/0
Magic Cost: 10
Type: Offensive
Element: Dark
Range: Ranged - 10 meters
Requirements: -
Effect: Peter creates 3 kunai knives - 8 inches in length, 2 inches in width, and 1 inch in height - and launches it at the opponent. They are thrown together in one direction, traveling at 8 meters per second. This is an instantaneous spell and causes small, dapple-like bruises.
Cooldown: 2 posts

Shadow Bind: Spiral
Tier: Base Spell
Sigils/Sigil Slots: 0/0
Magic Cost: 10, 5 continuous
Type: Utility
Element: Dark
Range: Ranged - 10 meters
Requirements: -
Effect: Peter connects his shadow with his opponent's shadow, allowing him to lauch his attack right from under his target. Tendrils of "hard" shadow (7 of them) shoot up from below and immediately wrap themselves around the body (stopping half-way through the neck) like a twizzler so that the limbs are immobilized and squished against the main body. At the end, if successful, the person will be trapped until released or he/she finds a way to break the shadow.
